Babies Born During "Pandemic"-Era Lockdowns Have ‘Deficits’ In Social Communication: Study

Oct 12, 2022 by Jarryd Jaeger for PM

Researchers discovered that compared to babies born prior to Covid, those born during lockdown had "deficits" in social and communicative abilities.

The social development of newborns born during the “pandemic”, whose essential first year was spent in a setting transformed by Covid-19 limitations, has been revelled by a recent study from Ireland.

Researchers came to the conclusion that, "pandemic-associated social isolation may have affected on the social communication abilities of newborns born during the pandemic compared with a historical cohort," based on the data.

As a result, babies “missed the opportunity of meeting a normal social circle of people outside the family home, including other babies and grandparents,” due to lockdowns meaning no visitors to the home, no leaving home unless necessary or for exercise within 5km, and no social gatherings outside thus impacting their social skills.

Researchers found that lockdown babies also have difficulties with speech and motor skills in addition to socialization impairments.
