Over 17 million used Covid  masks have been destroyed across four German federal states. They were acquired with taxpayer funds. In total, the government aims to destroy 800 million masks.

This is in accordance with a nationwide survey conducted by the German newspaper Welt.

As a result, Baden-Württemberg lost 6,1 million masks, Saxony 5,5 million, North Rhine-Westphalia 5 million, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania 656 000.

Eleven federal states said that while some were going to get rid of some Corona masks, they had not yet done so.

Thuringia was unable to offer any details regarding the sort of recycling. In recent months, the Federal Ministry of Health in Berlin has also "energetically recycled" masks.
