Some At-Home COVID Tests Contain Contain Toxic Chemical, Poison Control Centers Warn
A liquid found in some at-home COVID test kits contains the toxic chemical sodium azide which acts as preservative.
Sodium azide can cause low blood pressure, dizziness, headaches, and heart palpitations if swallowed in small doses, and larger amounts can cause seizures, loss of consciousness, or even death.
Sodium Azide is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless powder used in car airbags, farming for pest control, and detonators/other explosives. The chemical is also used in the process of manufacturing beer, wine, and rubber. Rapid antigen tests including BinaxNow, BD Veritor, Flowflex, and Celltrion DiaTrust all contain this chemical.
“Sodium azide is a very potent poison,” says the National Capital Poison Center, which is not a government agency, “and ingestion of relatively low doses can cause significant toxicity. Fortunately, the amount of sodium azide in most rapid antigen kits is much lower than the amount expected to cause poisoning if swallowed by an adult.”
